Maths, English and ICT
Functional skills in maths, English, and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) are essential for several reasons:
Adaptability: In a rapidly changing world, being proficient in these areas allows you to adapt to new technologies and methods of communication. This adaptability is crucial for personal and professional growth.
Everyday Life: These skills help you manage daily tasks, such as budgeting, reading instructions, and using technology effectively. For example, maths is crucial for handling finances, while English is necessary for understanding and communicating information.
Employment: Many jobs require a basic level of proficiency in these areas. Employers often look for candidates who can solve problems, communicate clearly, and use technology efficiently. These skills can make you more competitive in the job market.
Education: Functional skills provide a foundation for further learning. Whether you’re pursuing higher education or vocational training, a solid grasp of maths, English, and ICT is often required.
Problem-Solving: These skills enhance your ability to think critically and solve problems. Maths helps with logical reasoning, English improves your ability to analyse and interpret information, and ICT skills enable you to find and use digital resources effectively.
Required for apprenticeships
All apprenticeships require you to be at level 2 in both Maths and English. If you are not at this level, don’t worry, you can still start an apprenticeship but you must complete exams for maths and English within 9 months of starting your course.
